A record-high of 67,800 cruise passengers and crew are set to dock in South Australia this month.
This cruise season, October 2018 to March 2019, will see 84 cruise ships make their way to ports across the State. The 23 per cent rise in comparison to the 2017/18 season reveals the continued strong momentum in demand for South Australia’s unique experiences via cruises. The 2017/18 season saw eager travellers across 65 cruise ships contribute a record $118 million to the visitor economy, with a significant number venturing into the city of Adelaide to embrace our range of shopping precincts, the world-class events program, restaurants, cafes, our small bar scene as well as our cities arts and cultural offerings.
With the Cruise Line International Association Australasia 2017 Industry Report revealing that 34 per cent of last season’s 1.34 million Australian cruise passengers opted to cruise domestically, this season indicates significant potential growth in the city visitor economy. Recent Tourism Research Australia data revealed the city of Adelaide was visited by more than 2.7 million domestic travellers from September 2017 to September 2018, with a total spend of $2.3 billion. The historic high represented 33 per cent of the State’s total visitor economy worth.
