Purposefully designed with people in mind

Adelaide is on track to becoming one of the world’s smartest cities with a globally connected and opportunity rich economy.

We put people and businesses at the centre of everything we do. Our focus is on creating an ecosystem of open and citizen-driven innovation, building and sharing resources and services to generate new standards in the way people live, learn, work and do business.

Hyper-connected city

We are embedding 21st century digital technology into our City’s infrastructure to improve the functionality and integration of the entire City and economy.

A network of sensors support smart city projects and allow us to better manage functions such as energy consumption, carbon emissions and the movement of people.
We have created a hyper-connected city with free Wi-Fi, a Ten Gigabit Adelaide ultra-fast and affordable fibre optic network, and supported the Government’s Gig City and nbn™ initiatives and the deployment of LoRaWAN and 5G mobile technology.

Research, education, innovation

Adelaide boasts three world-class research universities, an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is sparking with potential and a focus on future industries.

We have a comparative advantage in the hi-tech sector, with clusters in med-tech, cyber security, advanced manufacturing, advanced data analytics, AI and creative industries.
Lot Fourteen, an innovation neighbourhood located at the former Royal Adelaide Hospital, has strong links to the defence and space technology industries and is home to the Australian Institute of Machine learning and the Australian Space Agency.
Collaborative and accessible

We have all the elements for success, and Adelaide's governing bodies, corporates and universities work closely together to advance our smart city achievements.

What’s already happening

International tech company Cisco has named Adelaide as it's first smart and connected ‘Lighthouse City’ in Australia. Lighthouse City status allows Adelaide access to Cisco’s global network and a partnership in the Internet of Things – the initiative to connect all computing devices into the internet.

Cisco has installed TelePresence video conferencing technology in the Adelaide Smart City Studio so experts from anywhere in the city or the world can participate, collaborate and share knowledge.

A network of sensors is installed around the CBD to support Smart City Pilot Projects. The Smart Environmental Monitoring, Smart Lighting and Smart City Parking are all pilot projects which will help Adelaide realise its ambition in becoming one of the world’s leading smart cities.

Adelaide Smart City Studio

The Adelaide Smart City Studio  creates opportunities for innovators to build the products and services that will be needed across the world for other cities to be truly smart.

The Studio has been designed as a flexible space that encourages collaboration in all its forms.
The space can be used:

  • To provide large and small workspaces for collaboration between developers, project teams or groups of students
  • As a demonstration space, where new services, applications and technologies can be tested and explained
  • As a space to host events and meetings
  • As a showcase for educating the community, developers and entrepreneurs.
